Access Your UMR AFS (S: drive) account remotely
The files you save on your UMR AFS (S: drive) account in the Computer Learning
Centers can be accessed from other computers, both on and off campus. The following
instructions show how to set up file access with FileZilla.
File Transfer with FileZilla
If you want to copy things you've saved on your S: drive to your computer, or
vice-versa, FileZilla will work for you. You can copy files back and forth, delete
files and folders, and create new folders.
-
Download FileZilla
- Go to the FileZilla
homepage, and click Download on the left. This will take you to a
SourceForge files page.
- On the SourceForge files page, click the Download link in for the
FileZilla package. This will bring you to a list of files.
- For Windows, click the file whose type is labeled .exe (32-bit
Windows). This will bring you to a mirror selection page.
- Click the Download link next to the server that's closest to you.
After you do this, you'll be asked to save the file.
- Choose a download location you can easily access, such as the Windows
Desktop or My Documents. Download the file.
-
Once you have the file saved, double click the .exe to open the installer
- Select your language.
- Agree to the license (It's the GPL, so you're not agreeing to
anything crazy. It's free.).
- You may leave the type of install as Standard, and click Next.
- You may leave the program path as the default, and click Next.
- You may leave the Start Menu group as the default, and click Next.
- For the General Settings page, I recommend leaving the defaults, "Do not
use secure mode," and "Use XML file." Move on to finish the installation.
-
After the installer completes, launch FileZilla with the desktop shortcut or
Start Menu shortcut.
- To set up access to your UMR AFS acount, click the File Menu and then click
Site Manager.
- Click the New Site button at the bottom of the window.
-
- Type a name for the new site, something like UMR AFS.
- Use the following settings:
-
- Host: rocket.cc.umr.edu (Alternatively:
saucer.cc.umr.edu)
- Port: 22
- Servertype: SFTP using SSH2
- Logontype: Normal
- User: Your AFS account name
- Password: Your AFS account pasword (You may leave it blank and
check the "Don't save password box," too)
- Click the Save and Exit button.
- Back in the main Window, click the small downward facing arrow next to the
Site Manager icon.
-
- Select the name of the site you created earlier.
- Type in your password if you are prompted to.
- If all is correct, you will now be logged in. Your local folders are in the
left panel, and your S: drive folders are in the right panel. You can double
click a file on either side to transfer it to the other side.
