Enabling MST Directory Access in Mozilla Thunderbird
It is possible to have the MST/ UM system e-mail address directory available in
Mozilla Thunderbird with the LDAP protocol. The following instructions should get it
up and running for you.
Instructions
Setting up your MST e-mail account with Thunderbird
If you have your MST e-mail set up already, skip ahead.
- Open Thunderbird.
- Click the Tools menu, then click Account Settings. The Account Settings window
will come up.
- Click the Add Account... button. The Account Wizard will come up.
- Click the Next button to choose a new e-mail account. The Identity screen will
come up.
- Fill in the Your Name field with the name you want to be displayed to recipents
when you send e-mail. Then, fill in your MST e-mail address in the Email Address
field. Then click Next to bring up the Server Information screen.
- Click the radio button labeled IMAP. Fill in the Incoming Server field with
minermail.mst.edu. I recommend unchecking the box labeled Use Global Inbox, if you
have more than one e-mail account you to use with Thunderbird. Click Next to bring
up the User Names screen.
- Fill in your complete MST e-mail address (include @mst.edu) in the
Incoming User Name field. If this is your first e-mail account with Thunderbird,
also fill in the Outgoing User Name with your full MST e-mail user name (don't
include @mst.edu). Click next to bring up the Account Name screen.
- Enter a name for the account, and click the Finish button. You'll return to the
Account Settings window.
- Under your new account's heading, click Outgoing Server (SMTP). The Outgoing
Server settings screen will come up.
- Click the radio button labeled SSL
- Click the OK button on the Account Settings window to return to the main
Thunderbird Window. Your e-mail account should be ready to use.
- Click the Get Mail button to download the message titles from your inbox.
Setting up Directory Access
- Click the Tools menu, then click Options. The Options window will come up.
- Click Composition button. The Composition options screen will come up.
- Under Address Autocompletion, click to check the Directory Server box. Then,
click the Edit Directories button to bring up the LDAP Directory Servers
window.
- Click the Add button to bring up the Directory Server Properties window.
-
Fill in the fields as follows:
- Base DN: Leave this blank, unless it doesn't work. In that case, make it
dc=edu
- In the Bind DN field, put in your full MST e-mail address, e.g.
vnv2g5@mst.edu
- Leave the "Use secure connection (SSL)" box unchecked.
- Click OK on this window, the LDAP Directory Servers Window, and the Options
window to get back to the main Thunderbird window.
- Click the Write button to start a new message.
- Start to type in a name in the To: field. Some windows will come up. Click to
accept the certificates temporarily, and enter your MST minermail password when it
asks.
- Names matching your search query should come up.
- Assuming this works, the next time you write a message do it, choose to accept
the certificates permanently, and check the box to save your password so you don't
have to re-enter it.
